There, children also learn Dhamma (Buddha's teachings), in addition to traditional school subjects. At the moment the nunnery lacks school-books, so children receive only exercise books in which they can write in during the classes. Having school-books would allow them to do some self study at home, and practice their reading skills. Reading and impersonating jātakas, is the next form of teaching. Those are the stories from the past Buddha's lives bringing always a very valuable moral message. Rehearsals of the theatre performance on this topic is one of the most popular activities in the nunnery school. We endeavour to make sure the kids have a good time and a positive school environment. Both the theatrical performances and the Dhamma classes are held in the main hall of the school building, which is located in the center of the village. It is relatively old, ruined and it does not offer a healthy environment for the children. For these reasons Suriya Lamai is aiming to collect enough fundings to renovate it.
Venerable Bhikkhunī Visuddhi could experience that Sri Lanka children love to play the theater (rehearsals of jātaka). They live with the playing of the stories and they genuinely enjoy the dances. They dress up for each of the chosen stories. They put on costumes and put a great effort into each of the role playings. Story drawings on a huge ark of paper is the second most popular activity during the Dhamma classes. Learning how to show respect to the parents and honour them. along with asking them for forgiveness are fundamental parts of Sri Lanka culture and of the education system in this school.
In the school of Dhamma the nuns lay extra stress on ethics. In the ārāma the children receive life teaching, they help with cleaning and take care of the center activities, they learn how to dine and how to act in in groups of children and adults.
School-books and charges for one young nun for one year = 52.000 (Rs) Rupees, (346,- EUR)
Register charges = 40,- EUR
Expenditures for the class and commuting = 240,- EUR
Cost for books = 66,- EUR
2. Children from the Nuwara Eliya mountain area
Nuwara Eliya is the name of the highest place in the mountains area in Sri Lanka. Families who live there with their children are often disadvantaged due to the distance from towns. In 2014 during the visit of Venerable Bhikkhunī Visuddhi there was a devastating landslide. Many families lost their homes, losing everything they had, and the others were in an unstable condition. “Very unusual floods appeared during the rainy season. Some of the areas were heavily damaged. The harm and loss were caused to a great extent. This action was not planned much in advance. We actually bought the food, the basic necessities and we started the journey to help and to rescue,” said the venerable Visuddhi. We bought the basic means for the children such as rice and other sorts of food, exercise books and pastel crayons. We could deliver supplies to family and children for an amount of 4.000, - EUR.
